“How much energy do electrical gadgets spend? “, “How can electricity be saved in school?”, “How do solar plants work?” These are exemplary questions the students deal with within the concept of SnEK (School- lasting education- environmental protection) in afternoon classes. After being originally intended as a two-year pilot project SnEK has turned into a worthwhile addition to the regular schedule of 10 all-day schools within the Hannover region. The goals are to sensitize students to topics like energy and climate protection and to save development opportunities of current and future generations. In an interactive and experience oriented atmosphere the students are able to acquire environmental knowledge and develop competence regarding problem solving and designing. Through individual detecting and solving of problems they learn concrete and effective ways of action for the day-to-day handling of alternative energies. Convinced of the idea of lasting education AS Solar contributes financially to the realization of the concept which will be expanded to more schools in the Hannover region next school year.

AS Solar supports Hanoverian artist Joy Lehmann’s new project as a sponsor in order to raise awareness towards environmental protection and global warming. From May 5th – September 27th, 2009 artificial islands, symbolizing the five continents, are floating on the Maschteich in Hannover. By contrasting the seeming nature idyll on the islands with 12 global hotspots of climate hazards, symbolized through warning lights, the artist wants to draw attention to the human influence on our planet. Keeping this in mind AS Solar provides the project with three solar modules, a battery and cables in order to give the spectator the opportunity to experience the piece of art in a completely different way at night. The lit warning lights stand for the expected climate catastrophes of the 21st century like drought and flooding. By the island’s continuing overgrowth the artist also shows the healing powers of our planet and thus, does not want his art to be seen as a purely negative sign towards the future.

The day had finally come on June 12th. AS Solar opened the photovoltaic plant on the roof of its new company headquarters. After a rather rainy morning the sun showed itself punctually in all its glory for the official start and made the approximately 1.200 mono and polycrystalline modules by renounced manufacturers shine in bright blue on the 5.000 m² roof area. With an installed total performance of 268kWp the plant is not only the largest PV-system in the region Hannover but could theoretically supply about 80 households with environmentally friendly electricity. The employment of modules and in verters by various brand manufacturers like Sanyo,
Solon, Schott, SolarWorld, SMA, Sunways, SolarMax and Kostal gives AS Solar the opportunity to field test its own products, the interaction between the individual components and analyze it with the in-house monitoring system AS
Control. All together 15km of cable and 5km of mounting rails were used in the construction.
After the festive start-up of the plant through regional president Hauke Jagau and AS Solar CEO Gerd Pommerien the numerous guests had the opportunity to tour the entire system and see for themselves that “100% renewable energies are possible here and now”.
